My Indignation.

Chile is a country of contrasts, we have plenty of landscapes, supposedly all the climates of the globe, social and economic stability yet…a monocultural and disrespectful country.

Historically from the different institutions, the country has sought for unity and social stability by means of making invisible the claims of several parts of society supporting only some aspect of national development and forgetting some other (i.e. we are still one of the countries with the biggest inequality rates) and though we have clearly made progress in several topics and areas, such as the minorities claims, educational costs, opening up of new and diverse economic sectors, etc. We still have a long way to go in order to make this country more inclusive, more “just” and a more balanced society.

Years ago we suffered from a dictatorship, later on, we had an economic boom. As a country, we have long before - and also after the dark ages, decided to endorse to the Human Rights Declaration, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Agreement 169 which is the convention concerning Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent Countries, and still nowadays, 2018, those documents which have built the Chilean Society from the constitutional grounds, are agreements and rationalities that are overlooked and even heavily disrespected, in particular, in certain actions that ought to be condemned and not allowed by society all together.

I am particularly talking about the news launched last year which informed us about a group of Special Forces from the Chilean police entering and attacking a school in the south of Chile, where many indigenous people live and where many struggles are occurring at a daily basis. The news let us know about a big group of policemen entering the school after having threatened all the population inside by throwing lacrimogenous gas, apparently, in the search for extremists hiding inside and or around  the school premises. Obviously this news was commented by the off-stream press and was published by several independent media (I have copied some links below this commentary)

In such actions we can see what I was talking about regarding a disrespectful, monocultural and struggling society because the news is not important since it relates to the social sector which little emphasis has been placed upon, and beyond confirming my claims, I believe there are bigger questions which stimulate in me a bigger indignation.

After having watched this piece of news I wonder about up to what point we are going to not think over the extreme conditions in which the conflict with the Mapuches is being managed, I wonder about the day in which we will stop denying we have a long and deep conflict with our Indigenous population which obviously arises with the fact that one way or another, as a government, the agreement 169 has not been respected. I also wonder of how this action, against human rights and furthermore, these actions which break the endorsement to Children Rights, will be penalized by justice if penalized at all!

Entering a school and having war-like behaviours inside or around a school makes the lives of all those children and all that community sink in fear, it makes a whole community full of anger, and furthermore, not even in war events will police or navy be allowed to enter a school with unprotected children, just because soldiers have the morals of not affecting so much the future generations of a culture, unless the aim is genocide, soldiers would respect and ensure safety for children, but in the case of the Chilean police… I wonder, where’s their morals?

With this blog I would like to state my absolute indignation with the police officers, with the central and regional government of the Araucanía, I would like to state the strongest disapproval of their way to conduct the conflict and why not state it, they are going against human rights with the actions they are performing which by all means must be penalized and furthermore, I consider they should be sent to jail on the grounds that they stained the souls of a whole community, and hence, of the new generations of Temucuicui …. And to me, it is almost the same than killing the future for a child, which is also a felony, a bad action, a despicableand vicious crime.

  1. The excessive police force have been maintained during the last years, and it is growing.
Unfortunately, during political conflicts, children are the most affected.
I felt so angry when Michelle Bachelet was assigned as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Let's not forget the case of Brandon Hernández Huentecol, who was shot by Carabineros in the back, a hundred times! in the government of Michelle Bachelet.

  2. It hurts a lot to think that in our country, despite the many cases of violation of Human Rights that have marked our history, this continues happen today, and also hurts that as a society we are so indifferent to such a situation.

  3. I completely agree with you, I think that the national police do not act in the best way in some situations. I feel sad for those children and those families that have been historically assaulted and insulted in different ways. The worst thing is that the traditional mass media validates this situation, which is unacceptable.

  5. I agree. You should watch Patricio Guzmán's movie: "Nacar Botton" (El botón de Nacar). You'll realize we don't have memory and identity

  6. It is incredible that even after so many years, the state of Chile continues to ignore the importance of this conflict in the Araucanía and now with the promise of the injection of private investments in the region, the situation becomes a matter of money and human rights violations remain out of sight.

  7. I totally agree with your point of view, this is the kind of stuff that the government will always try to hide, it is awful the procedure of the special forces in Chile, it is noticeable how the things haven´t change that much since the end of the dictatorship.
    Great Post!

  8. I agree with you and my classmates, this kind of acts are a shame for our government and our armed forces, the saddest thing of all is that there are still many compatriots who endorse this kind of fasist acts.

  9. I agree with you! Is really sad think that the way to act of police on some situations depends on the kind of people they are facing.

Post 4 (05-11): Experiences

Tough as Nails: Experiences at University  (200 words. 3 comments and comment on Teacher's blog) "Tough as nails", that was my idea about Uni back when I was a 17 year old  freshman, starting a degree in civil construction. I had heard my father, many times, telling memories from his college years and the most common thought was that he has to study hard as hell. He even claimed one class could be as intense as one month of regular high school lessons. Imagine that! So there I was, facing the unknown, suffering a bit from the pledges but still up to the challenge. My first class was Calculus I -engineers' stuff. And ... Voila!  Only  the first class and the Professor had already made a full revision of what we were supposed to have learnt at school. Of course I freaked out! I had to double study. It was really hard at first but after some time I made very good friends and study groups. I started to remember and make up for the things I d...

Because of many reasons, but mostly, because it is such a varied and colorful contry. Russia has an incredible population,  they are 142.5 million people according to the statistics given by the UN in 2007. The number might seem scary, but don't worry! Density is low because of the country’s enormous size, in fact,  its geography is composed of more than 17 million square kilometres! This huge land is the home of one of the mo...
